The New Derby Cocktail Expands Beyond the Mint Julep.

Old Forester has announced the debut of “The Perfecta,” a new cocktail created for the 2026 Kentucky Derby season. The cocktail is designed to offer an alternative to the traditional Mint Julep and will be served during Derby week at select Old Forester signature bars.

The release also includes a limited-edition vintage-style branded cup, available exclusively at these locations.

Crafted for Modern Cocktail Drinkers

The Perfecta features a combination of Old Forester 86 Proof bourbon, pineapple juice, and ginger beer, served over ice and garnished with lime and mint.

Master Taster Melissa Rift said, “While the Mint Julep has rightfully remained a Derby mainstay for generations, we wanted to create something that speaks to today’s cocktail enthusiast. The Perfecta delivers a perfectly balanced, refreshing option that brings new excitement to Churchill Downs and to bars and restaurants nationwide.”

Ingredients and Build

The cocktail is composed of:

  • 1.5 oz Old Forester 86 Proof
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 3 oz ginger beer
  • Garnish: lime and mint

It is served over ice in a branded cup as part of the Derby week activation.

Availability

The Perfecta will be available at select Old Forester signature bars throughout Kentucky Derby week.

How to Make “The Perfecta” at Home

Can’t make it to Louisville for Derby Week festivities? We’ve compiled some step-by-step instructions for making this cocktail at home!

  1. Fill your glass with ice
Use a highball or julep-style cup and fill it completely with fresh ice to ensure proper chilling.
  2. Add the bourbon base
Pour 1.5 oz of Old Forester 86 Proof (or even the 100 Proof for a little extra kick) over the ice.
  3. Incorporate the fruit
Add 1 oz of pineapple juice. For best results, use fresh juice.
  4. Top with ginger beer
Slowly pour 3 oz of ginger beer into the glass. Pour gently down the length of a bar spoon to preserve carbonation.
  5. Lightly stir
Give the drink a gentle stir—just enough to combine ingredients without flattening the ginger beer.
  6. Garnish and finish
Add a lime wedge or wheel and a fresh mint sprig. Lightly clap the mint between your hands before placing it to release fresh aroma of the mint.
  7. Serve immediately
    Enjoy while cold and effervescent.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use a homemade or high quality, spicy ginger beer to balance out the pineapple sweetness.
  • Chill your glass as you gather your ingredients for the coldest serve.
  • Adjust the amount of pineapple juice slightly to taste if you prefer more or less sweetness.
