Bourbon Heritage Month Day 21 Review

Bourbon from the Black Hills is the moniker of Old Man Winter.  Have you had a chance to try this blend of Kentucky and Indiana bourbons from Preservation Distillery? I hadn’t but decided to sit down with this pour as I waited for my daughter to be born last night.  Let’s dive into this pour!

Just the Facts:

  • Style: Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • Mashbill: Undisclosed
  • Age: Undisclosed
  • Proof: 109
  • Price: $149.99

Jake’s Tasting Notes: Old Man Winter

Nose:  The nose starts with sweet corn grains.  It is followed by notes of vanilla, brown sugar, leather and a whisp of coconut.

Palate: The sweet nose continues over to the palate.  It has a very light mouthfeel with fruity notes of citrus and coconut. Followed by black pepper and balanced by vanilla and chocolate.

Finish: The finish is barrel tannic with sweet lingering notes of vanilla.  It has a medium to long finish.

Bourbon Lens Closing Thoughts

This is a unique pour. Blending the Kentucky and Indiana bourbons creates a ton of flavors that I would have never expected like coconut. If you are looking for a unique sip with a good amount of flavor grab a pour at a local bar. If you like it invest, sometimes it can be hard to shell out $149.99.

About Preservation Distillery

The world got its first taste of the profound history and proud tradition of “America’s Official Native Spirit” when the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA) established the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® in 1999, a road trip-style experience for Bourbon lovers to visit the Bluegrass State’s signature distilleries. In 2012, the KDA created the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® to complement the world-famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail® experience. Bourbon lovers can stop at a few of the distilleries or all 46—there is no wrong way to experience it. Every journey is personalized and requires planning, as some of the distilleries are as far as 70 miles apart. There’s something for everyone—tours, tastings, activities, big-city nightlife, quaint country towns, Bourbon-themed hotels and historic bed & breakfast accommodations.
